If Yvonne Walus were a colour, she would be....

"If I came to your house and looked in your closet/attic/basement, what’s the one thing that would surprise me the most?"

Weeds 4 (yes, that's TV)

Is anybody else a bit disappointed with Weeds 4? I miss the lead song and I miss the matchbox house suburbia. Most of all, I miss the less insane plot lines.

OK, what I do like:
  • Silas' new hairstyle
  • the ocean
  • and Guillermo is growing on me (no pun intended).
The show is still in the top 3 TV series for me, after LOST and Eureka.

Best news of 2009: more Eureka is on the way and Proson Break is drawign to a final curtain.

La Grande Dame

I'm reading non-fiction for pleasure. That must be the first (I read non-fiction in order to cope with the kids). Ok, except for Richard Feynman's "Surely you're joking, Mr Feynman".

Anyway, my current reader is about the widow Clicquot (la grande dame) and her biscuity yellow champagne. The book's cover is also yellow... and that's about all I can tell you about it without lifting my bottom off the computer chair or opening another browser window, so if you need to know the author or the actual title, ask Dr. Google or your local librarian.

(I swear, those ladies are sharp! A few months ago I asked them one of those dreaded questions: "I'm looking for a specific book with sock pirates in it. A children's book."
"Ah, you must mean The Baby Brumble. Let's see if it's on the shelf."
Just like that.
"That was easy," she said. "The worst I've had was: I'm looking for a book I've heard about. It's very thick.")

Anyway, the Veuve Clicquot champagne is heaven, and the book offers gorgeous insights into the wine-making world, including the fact that 200 years ago champagne was 200 times sweeter than it is today.

In honor of this month's virtual book tour for Avenging Angel, A Shannon Wallace Mystery, I am including here an excerpt for my new readers. It's a shortie, y'all!

And, tonight I am hosting a fabulous romance author, Raven Starr on my radio show, and would love for you to come by and have a listen, and you can call in too!
http://www.blogtalkradio.com/kims

Here is the excerpt:
I stood in the middle of his ecru-colored, plushy furnished office, with my mouth open, making noises that came out in short stuttering sounds. A little bit like gargling.

“What did I do?” I finally managed.

He averted his eyes. “Call it downsizing.”

What was he really saying?

“What about us?” I asked, heartsick. I hated to even mention our relationship at this point. It was like a backhanded way of begging.

He shifted in the creaky leather chair, positioned himself with one arm behind his head. The other hand twirled the pen between his fingers. He could have been giving dictation for all his appearance.

“You’re a nice girl, Shannon, a little naïve but nice. We’ve had some fun, but it’s probably lasted too long. Things like this happen in business environments where a couple work as closely as we have. Here today, gone tomorrow. There’s no ‘us’. Not anymore. Let’s not fool ourselves. If you think about it, you’ll agree it’s best to keep it that way. Better if you just go out with style. Stoic, and proud.”
Proud of what? My blood pressure skyrocketed.

Whispered stories in the filing room returned to haunt me. Rick’s reputation marked him as a major player. I scoffed at it. I would change all that. Yeah, right. My fault for thinking he cared more about me than making the company money. I stared at the insincere smile plastered across his tanned face.

Stoic, was it?

My Aunt Nancy always said a woman should never have to use her power of persuasion, either for her good or for her ruin. Too late now, my ruination loomed, imminent.

I walked to his solid pine double pedestal desk and leaned over. The thin cotton tank top showed plenty of cleavage. I crooked my finger to get him to move closer. He did, eyes darting from my chest to my face. I let him get an eyeful, and then once I had his attention, I slapped him as hard as I could.

“Stoic that, you jerk. You’ll never make president of this company. You haven’t got the balls for it. I hope your trip up the corporate ladder gives you a heart attack and kills you!”

His face changed from bitch-slapped red to purple. I did the most prudent thing possible, I turned on my heel, collected my check from Payroll and went to get wobbly-ass drunk.

Shannon Cooks!

Hey y'all ! Today, I am here to tell you that my aunts are not the only ones who can cook. Yes, they have the restaurant, Tillie's Home Cookin'--IT'S GOOOD! but I like to tinker in the kitchen, too.

So, nuff said.

While you are enjoying Avenging Angel, Kim Smith's cozy mystery about my awful, terrible, no good, very bad week, enjoy some food on me!

MY curry turkey stir fry

Turkey tenderloins, sliced into strips
One red bell pepper
Broccoli
4 tbsp corn starch
1 ¼ cup chicken broth
Curry powder, or use turmeric, ginger or cinnamon, cumin, chili powder, and salt to make your own version
Brown Rice

Cook the turkey in a non stick skillet for approximately 10 mins, or until it is almost done. Add the red bell pepper and broccoli (I used the steam in a bag kind of broccoli so it was already cooked) cook for two mins.

Mix the chicken broth with the curry powder and corn starch. Pour it over the turkey mix and cover and cook on med high heat for about four mins. Longer if your broccoli is not already cooked.

While that cooks, I used the steam in a bag brown rice, and I cook it according to package directions.

Serve the turkey mix over the rice, serve with some pineapple for sweetness and viola!
